St. Clair College Men’s Basketball Move Record to 4-5 before Break

(Mississauga, Ontario) - The St. Clair College Men’s Basketball team responded well with an 85-78 victory over the University of Toronto in Mississauga Sunday afternoon to earn a weekend GTA split. The Saints are just below the .500 mark before the holiday break holding a 4-5 record in the OCAA’s West Division.

St. Clair had a slim 19-17 lead after the opening quarter but relinquished it and fell behind by 7 points (32-25) in the second. An 11-2 run before the half allowed the Saints to retain at 36-34 advantage into the intermission. The Saints put together their best quarter in the third outscoring Toronto 26-20 and at one point held a 12-point lead. The home side didn’t give in and worked their way back to near even (72-71) in the fourth. However, St. Clair didn’t give them any more life and secured the game down the stretch. The Saints held Toronto to just 32% shooting from the floor and owned the paint outscoring them 48-22 around the basket.

Saints guard David Gomez Jr. (Pontiac, MI) scored a game high 25 points dishing out 5 assists to go with 6 rebounds and 5 steals. Jalen Sykes (Redford, MI) scored 16 points adding 5 rebounds with teammate Nik Veigli (Cottam, ON/Essex District) hitting 5 triples for 15 points. Juwan Lynch (Windsor, ON/Kennedy Collegiate) chipped in with 10 points and 6 assists while Ian Smart (Chatham, ON) secured 11 rebounds and scored 8 points for the Saints.

Men's Volleyball End Semester with Win

(Windsor, Ontario) – The St. Clair College men’s volleyball wrapped up their first half schedule with a much needed 3-0 win over the visiting Sheridan Bruins on Sunday afternoon at the Sportsplex.

Set scores for the Saints were 25-21, 25-21 and 25-21.

Fourth year outside hitter Michael Knight (LaSalle; Sandwich Secondary) led the way offensively with 10 kills, 1 stuff block, 3 service aces and 9 digs. Rookie outside hitter Frankie Friesen (Staples; Tilbury District) had a great game as well with 9 kills on 20 attempts, 2 service aces, 1 stuff block and 11 digs. Setter Zach Draper (London; Saunders Secondary) spread the ball around well picking up 27 assists in the match.

With the win the Saints improved to 3-6 on the season while Sheridan fell to 3-6. The Bruins are currently ranked 9th in the OCAA.

St. Clair College Women’s Basketball Outlast University of Toronto

(Mississauga, Ontario) – The St. Clair College Women’s Basketball team salvaged a weekend split after a 74-69 win over the University of Toronto in Mississauga Sunday afternoon. The Saints enter the holiday break with a 6-3 record in the OCAA’s West Division.

St. Clair opened well with a 22-11 lead after the first quarter and were comfortably ahead 47-28 by halftime. The Saints increased their advantage to 22 points midway through the third quarter but allowed Toronto to whittle away the remainder of the game closing to within 69-67 with under 2 minutes to go. But St. Clair held on for the victory with a few key plays late including a Marissa Mara (Sarnia) triple.

Saints 2nd year point guard Anna Ulicny (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne) continued her strong play scoring 25 points and added 8 rebounds. Noor Bazzi (Windsor, ON/Vincent Massey) also reached double figures for St. Clair scoring 10 points to go with 7 rebounds and 5 assists.

The St. Clair Women’s Basketball team will travel to Montreal for the Dawson College Winter Classic Tournament Jan. 3-5 before resuming their OCAA regular season schedule at home Jan. 12th against Humber College (Etobicoke).
