Area food banks got a big boost just in time for the holidays with a $75,267 donation from ticket sales for the Sleighing Hunger concert – the largest amount raised to date.

St. Clair College partnered with Caesars Windsor and local band The S'Aints six years ago to raise money for area food banks at the annual Sleighing Hunger holiday concert at the Colosseum.

The money will be shared among the 15 member agencies which belong to the Windsor-Essex County Food Bank Association and Chatham Outreach for Hunger.

"This donation is going to be used for items that you don't typically get in food drives, such as fresh meats, fruits, vegetables, breads, eggs, margarine, cheese," said Brenda LeClair, executive director of Chatham Outreach for Hunger.

June Muir, executive director of the Unemployed Help Centre, said the food bank association served 137,000 individuals last year in this region, including 46,000 children. "One in four children in Windsor lives in poverty," Muir said. "So, that in itself tells you what this (donation) means and what Caesars Windsor, St. Clair College and The S'Aints have done for people in our community."
