On Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4, St. Clair College, the University of Windsor, several Indigenous community organizations, local school boards, and post-secondary institutions will host the 1st Annual Alumni & Student Pow Wow. The theme of the Pow Wow is a celebration of Indigenous students and alumni. We are now seeing more Indigenous students reaching their educational aspirations and career goals.
Our committee of Indigenous student support specialists, educators, and community organizations wanted to host a major event to celebrate their successes. This event is culturally based and may be known more casually as a “Pow Wow.” A lot of Indigenous youth in this area do not have many opportunities to travel outside of their urban community and have little opportunity to participate in cultural events such as this. Not only will this event honour our Indigenous students, but it will also provide an opportunity for members of our Indigenous community to share their culture with those in the Windsor and Essex areas. This event is a part of First Nations tradition, culture, and heritage.
More than 1,000 students from across Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent will fill the St. Clair College SportsPlex, 2000 Talbot Road W., Windsor on Friday, June 3rd to experience and learn about this unique cultural event which will include world-class Pow Wow dancers, singers, craftspeople, information booths, and many more interesting attractions.
Saturday, June 4th will be open to the public with Grand Entry beginning at 11:00 am, followed by a community feast at 5:00 pm. Join in with the surrounding communities for a two-day celebration with students and local Indigenous dancers in full regalia, craft vendors, and more! It will be a spectacular event you will not want to miss!
