Program Overview
The Medical Laboratory Technologist assesses the types of blood cells and microorganisms that cause disease, provides chemical analysis of blood and body fluids, performs the processing of tissue samples for microscopic evaluation, and determines the compatibility of blood for transfusion.
This program will appeal to students with a love and knowledge of sciences and an investigative nature. They should have good manual dexterity and must be able to work accurately and quickly under pressure to make decisions which directly affect the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Program Highlights
- As an accredited program, graduates are provided the opportunity to write the general MLT certification exams offered by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science.
- Ability to apply to the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario for a license to practice in Ontario clinical labs.
- Accredited by Equal, Accreditation Canada.
Career Opportunities
A nationwide shortage of Medical Laboratory Technologists exists in Canada. Graduates are employed as medical technologists, research assistants, quality control technicians and laboratory technicians in hospitals, public and private medical laboratories, in clinical research and pharmaceutical laboratories, as well as in sales or technical assistance.
Degree Completions
Students who graduate the program may receive advanced standing in credits that can be applied towards a Bachelor of Science (General Science) degree at the University of Windsor. See Credit Transfer & Pathway Agreements for further details.
Program Goals
The Medical Laboratory Science program graduate will have the essential skills required to assess the types of blood cells and microorganisms that cause disease, provide chemical analysis of blood and body fluids, perform the processing of tissue samples for microscopic evaluation, and determine the compatibility of blood for transfusion. Graduates will meet all requirements of the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) MLT competencies and will be eligible to obtain certification from the CSMLS by challenging the CSMLS MLT Exam.

Please be aware that although a COVID-19 vaccination is not required to attend St. Clair College, all our placement sites may require students to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 to be eligible to attend. Unfortunately, we cannot predict if a placement site will begin to require full vaccination and as such, we are encouraging all students to consider vaccination. If the requirement of your placement sites changes at any point, you will be notified immediately by the College.
It is important to note that if placement sites do require students to be fully vaccinated to attend their organization, students who are not fully vaccinated cannot be provided with a placement for their program and therefore will not be able to complete their programs.
If you have any questions about the COVID-19 vaccines, please contact our St. Clair College Health Centre at 519-972-2727 ext. 4484 (in Windsor) or 519-354-9100 ext. 3729 (in Chatham).
Employers who provide our field placement settings require a clear POLICE RECORD CHECK for criminal offences with vulnerable sector screening before accepting a student into the field placement setting. The record check MUST be obtained by the student at the student's expense prior to the start of semester 5. Employers also require an N95 Mask Fit Testing as well as an up-to-date Health Passport (Medical Requirements Form) including a TB skin test completed 4 weeks before the clinical semester (AAL005) start date.
PRIOR TO CLASSES
Entering Semester 1 - Due September 15th for September Intake

Returning Semester 5 - Due August 15th
- Police Clearance with vulnerable sector screening, to be uploaded to SIS.
- Acknowledgement of Responsibility
- Employers also require an N95 Mask Fit Testing
- An up-to-date Health Passport (Medical Requirements Form)
Please note that some clinical sites require a new 1-step TB test within one month of the start of your clinical rotation. You will be notified on an individual basis if you are required to obtain an additional TB test.
The confidentiality agreement and police clearance with vulnerable sector screening must be completed and uploaded to SIS by August 15th. Instructions on how to upload this documentation can be found at the following links:
Additional Information
Clinical sites may require additional onboarding documentation and activities, including training modules, tutorials, and site-specific forms. Students will be provided with their placement site location in March, to have sufficient time to make appropriate arrangements.
Please note that placements in Windsor are not guaranteed, and students may be expected to relocate for the 30-week duration of their clinical placement.
Students will complete 1,125 clinical placement hours that can be scheduled on days, afternoons, or night shifts, including weekdays and weekends within a 30-week period. Site-specific schedules will be shared by the clinical coordinator prior to the start of the clinical rotation.
Students will register for their first eligible CSMLS MLT certification exam, dates dependent on their placement schedule.
